All on the way there, he kept fidgeting. He was nervous it
was hard not to make that conclusion. But it was cute, in a way that she didn’t
really know why. At the mechanics he had fumbled for words and Charlotte had to
intervene a few times to explain the situation.
The drive back was just as interesting. He would constantly
reach for the dial of the radio to switch channels, until finally Charlotte touched
his hand lightly to insist he stop doing so. After that he seemed a whole lot
calmer and their conversations about nothing were a welcome respite for
Charlotte and all her headaches.
Back on spintex, the traffic had lessened and Victor was
kind to buy some roast corn and coconut for her and the mechanic who had been strenuously
wrenching and crooning over the hood of her car. Charlotte thought she was
actually lucky to have had the accident, the car would be in much better
condition than before and Victor insisted that he didn’t mind handling the
costs.
After an hour or so the mechanic was done with his
performance and Victor was happy to take him back to his worksite. But
Charlotte didn’t want him to go just yet. Leaning on the window of the
passenger door she asked if Victor would want to get something to eat sometime.
“Yeh, sure I would like that. Mmm tomorrow I could, we could
meet at umm, where did you say you stayed again?”
“Up spintex, past coca cola junction.”
“Not too bad we can get a nice breakfast – something, you
know, cheap easy to find, coco and bofrot?”
“Anything would be fine Victor. Thank you for crashing into
me.”
“Ha, funny. Glad to be of service, if you need crashing
again don’t be scared, to ask, ha I will be here.”
Exchanged smiles and numbers, and Charlotte was all too soon
back in her car shoulders slumped and creeping up the long road back home.
